Ashar is a Registered Provisional Psychologist who brings curiosity, cultural humility, and a strong commitment to collaborative, client-centred care to his work. He strives to foster a therapeutic space grounded in safety, respect, and genuine partnership, where clients feel supported in exploring their experiences at their own pace and in their own way.
He holds a Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in History from MacEwan University. His academic training provides a strong foundation in psychological theory while also emphasizing the broader social, cultural, and historical contexts that shape mental health and wellbeing.
Ashar has completed over 300 hours of direct client work through his counselling practicum at The Family Centre in Edmonton. In this role, he provided both short-term and longer-term therapy to children, adolescents, and adults presenting with concerns such as mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, trauma, and eating-related challenges. His clinical interests include working with adolescents and young adults, particularly those navigating identity development, relationships, and life transitions. Ashar integrates evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and a trauma-informed lens to help clients make meaning of their experiences and build upon their existing strengths.
In addition to his counselling practicum, Ashar has worked in acute and community mental health settings, including roles as a Psychiatric Aide at Alberta Hospital Edmonton, a Mental Health Coordinator in primary care, and a Clinical Observer in inpatient psychiatry. Through these roles, he gained experience with psychiatric assessment, psychotropic medications, and interdisciplinary care. He has further developed his skills through research assistant positions examining the mental health impacts of COVID-19 on adolescents and Albertans, as well as teaching assistant roles focused on psychometric assessment. Ashar has completed training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills, Psychological First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Basic Life Support, and Trans Wellness Initiative Introduction to Affirming Spaces Training. Across all areas of his work, he aims to create a warm, nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to move toward lives that are more values-aligned and meaningful to them.
Provisional Psychologist Billing and Insurance Reimbursement
Please note that provisional psychologists are not eligible to provide direct billing through TELUS eClaims insurance providers. Clients receiving services from a provisional psychologist will be responsible for payment at the time of service.
Following payment, clients are encouraged to submit their invoice and receipt directly to their insurance provider for reimbursement, in accordance with their individual extended health benefits plan. Coverage and reimbursement amounts are determined solely by the client’s insurance provider, and Nova Psychology cannot guarantee eligibility or reimbursement.
