About Tara
Hi my name is Tara, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I’m a registered member of the College of Registered Psychotherapist of Ontario (CRPO), and the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).
Who do I Work With & What can I Help With?
I have a passion to work with all people, of all ages! I understand how hard life can be and am empathetic to the struggles we are all dealing with. My ideal case load includes a mix of teens, adults, and couples. I strive to support each client with unconditional regard, acknowledging they know themselves best. I collaborate with each client to come up with goals and coping mechanisms that they feel comfortable and confident in implementing throughout all areas of their lives: work, school, and socially. This may include areas such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, work stress, school behaviours, life transitions, relationship stress, and parenting support.
My Therapeutic Approach:
I enjoy building a strong therapeutic alliance with all clients using warmth, humour, and honesty; I have been known to dabble in irreverant communication! My goal for each person is to not only feel comfortable and supported, but to look forward to and enjoy their sessions. Clients will feel secure, supported, and advocated for. I excel at building a solid rapport with both teens and adults- people are my thing!
My therapeutic approach centers on person-centred therapy. Each client is different! Within this framework I work with varying theories and modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT), Behavioural and Acceptance and Commitment Theory (ACT) and Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT). My therapeutic modalities include Motivational Interviewing, and Strength and Solution-Based approaches. I enbrace challenge and am not afraid to explore all theories/modalities if I feel they could help my clients.
I use the Gottman Method Couples Counselling when working with couples. The goals of this methology are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship (https://www.gottman.com/about/the-gottman-method/). Couples counselling can be especially intimate and vulnerable; I hope to empower couples with the above tools to help build strong relationships!
Training:
I have previously received my B.A in Education and now my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology! I have also completed Level 1 & 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
