Melanie Buchanan (she/her) is masters of counselling student therapist and Registered Social Worker with eight years of experience in mental health, community services, and family support. Known for her calm and thoughtful presence, Melanie aims to create a respectful and supportive space where clients feel comfortable exploring their experiences.
Philosophy
Melanie believes that therapy offers an opportunity to slow down and better understand what may feel overwhelming or difficult to navigate alone. She values creating a space where clients feel heard and respected while exploring their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Melanie approaches therapy with curiosity and compassion, supporting clients as they gain clarity and move toward meaningful change at a pace that feels right for them.
Therapeutic Approach
Melanie uses a collaborative and integrative approach to counselling, recognizing that each client’s experiences and needs are unique. Her work is trauma-informed and strength-based, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness practices, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and parts work (Internal Family Systems). Through these approaches, she supports clients in building insight, developing coping strategies, and strengthening their relationship with themselves and others.
Focus Areas
Melanie specializes in helping individuals navigate stress, emotional challenges, life transitions, and relationship or family concerns. Her background working in family services and community-based settings has shaped her understanding of how personal history, relationships, and life experiences influence well-being. Melanie works with clients to increase emotional awareness, explore patterns that may be impacting their lives, and develop practical ways to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
