About Lesley

Hi, I’m Lesley Dalzell. I am a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) in the province of Ontario. I am a member of the OCSWSSW (Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers) and the OASW (Ontario Association of Social Workers). I have over 15 years’ experience working in the mental health field at Family Health Teams, in community mental health agencies, and in private practice. My interest in a mind/body connection led me to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Psychology and a minor in Neuroscience. From there I fulfilled my ultimate goal of working directly with people and completed a Masters in Clinical Social Work. I have been lucky to pursue and learn so much about health and healing; I look at it as a lifelong deepening of our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Who do I work with & What can I help with? I work mostly with young adults, individuals and couples. I take a holistic approach to my work addressing conflicts and confusion around physical, emotional, relational and/or spiritual issues. These conflicts can arise and manifest as symptoms of anxiety, panic, depression, stress, insomnia, emotional dysregulation, relational problems. I can help to understand the root causes of these challenges and support change over time to build a more grounded, and aware sense of self. I have experience in the following areas: Anger Management Behavioural Issues Borderline Personality (BPD) Relationships Parenting School Issues Codependency Self Esteem Couples Therapy Coping Skills Self-Harm Divorce Sexual Abuse Emotional Disturbance Stress Family Conflict Substance Use Grief Suicidal Ideation Relationship Issues My Therapeutic Approach I am a compassionate and curious person. I value people in their vulnerability and at all stages of their healing journey. I can help through offering a different way of thinking about issues, ways to cope, and resources to try. I can be direct and gently challenging in order to support change and growth. I use many different theories and practical interventions to inform my work with clients. I find attachment theory, developmental theory, polyvagal theory, and internal family systems particularly helpful to understand and conceptualize people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Training I am trained in EMDR for individuals seeking trauma treatment. I am also trained in Internal Family Systems, CBT and DBT, which I use in my trauma-informed approach with clients. I am trained in the Gottman Method for my work with couples. What else should you know? Whether you have never reached out for counselling before or if you have worked on other areas of your life in the past, counselling is a brave pursuit and expression of self-care. I feel privileged to work in the field I do and I’m committed to offering the best possible support to my clients. At this time I only work Fridays in Port Elgin, which is important to know if booking with me.
