About Justin

Justin Mai was born and raised in Ottawa. He obtained his Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics and Masters of Physical Therapy at University of Ottawa and The University of Sydney (Sydney, Australia), respectively. Justin is extremely passionate about human movement and helping you overcome injuries so that you can feel better and continue doing what you love. Whether that’s running, lifting in the gym, playing sports, or supporting your general health and fitness to confidently keep up with your kids and/or reduce the risk of future injuries or limitations - your goals are his goals. Justin has successfully helped runners with chronic foot and knee pain get back to running, gym-goers with back pain get back to squatting, deadlifting, and other lifts. As well as, active people that fell out of their routines rebuild their foundation – helping them feel an improved confidence in their bodies and movement patterns again. Justin truly lives by his motto: “I’m not my diagnosis, and injuries don’t define me” Before becoming a physiotherapist, Justin was the person stuck in chronic pain from sport injuries and health conditions. He missed out on road trips with friends, Spartan Races with siblings, and felt as though he lost his identity because he couldn’t play soccer or lift in the gym in the way he wanted to. He had many challenging days feeling stuck and alone because of his pain and injuries – but something in him said, “This isn’t me. I refuse to live my life stuck in chronic pain. I’m getting better, and there’s no other option”. Life then challenged him even further … with the diagnosis of two autoimmune conditions: Psoriatic Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. These conditions can cause high levels of pain, inflammation, and stiffness through his spine and joints (foot, knee, neck, shoulder, etc) that usually require people to go on long-term medications called biologics. But being the stubborn person he is… he didn’t want to rely on medication as the way to feel better and went on a deep journey of healing. Safe to say — Justin was able to get his autoimmune conditions to a stage of remission. Meaning there are no active inflammatory or “worsening processes” at the moment and most importantly, chronic pain no longer controls his life. Now as a Physiotherapist, Justin views his healing journey as an opportunity to turn his pain into purpose. He has grown to feel gratitude and a deep sense of purpose to help the people that want to get better through their injuries, so that they can do the things that they love and live with an improved quality of life. He approaches care with the mindset that he may not have all the answers, but what you can expect from him is a therapist that genuinely cares about your mental well-being and physical health, who believes that the best results come from collaborating, communicating, and working together on your healing. He looks forward to connecting, hearing your stories, guiding your rehab and walking by your side through the path of healing, movement, and strength.
