About Samuel

Dr. Samuel Orji is a Registered Provisional Psychologist and Canadian Certified Counsellor who works from a culturally informed and strength-based lens with children (age 10+), teens and emerging adults, adults, couples, families, and 2SLGBTQ+ persons, focusing on anxiety, depression, self-esteem, stress, trauma, grief, and relationship challenges. As a Registered Provisional Psychologist, Samuel practices under the supervision of Dr. Charles Coleman. He completed his Doctor of Psychology at California Southern University and his Master of Counselling Psychology at the City University of Seattle. Samuel’s past work experience includes an internship at Calgary Counselling Center and supporting individuals with diverse mental health presentations in his previous workplace. Prior to his Counselling career, he worked in human resources and earned a Master’s in Managerial Psychology in Nigeria. Samuel’s approach to counselling is warm, compassionate, and client-centered. He aims to inspire hope while helping his clients feel heard, held, felt, and seen. He loves laughing out loud with his clients and believes that “laughter is medicine,” after all. Samuel can be straightforward, sometimes explicit, and often draw out the glistening moments in the client’s story, evoking a sense of agency and healing. He invites his clients to hold him accountable, as he employs cultural humility in his practice. Samuel adopts an integrative approach in counselling, tailored to the client’s needs. He draws primarily on narrative therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapies, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Gottman’s methods, trauma-informed therapies, and systemic and blended family modalities. Samuel loves reading, connecting with family and friends, cooking, listening to music and singing, going to the gym, and writing. He particularly enjoys spending time with his daughter as they engage in “dada and daughter” moments, singing, dancing, and playing. On “lazy” days, he binges on films and shows and cannot seem to get over movies like Finding Forrester. Areas of Specialization: Couples and Relationships, Family (nuclear and blended families), Infidelity, Sexual and Intimacy Concerns, 2SLGBTQ+ (individuals and couples), Stress, Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Grief and Loss, Addictions, Self-Esteem and Identity, Religion and Spirituality.
