About Daryl

Daryl Thomson always thought he might end up working in a field where he could help and support others. Friends and family frequently commented on his ability to empathize deeply with others, to listen patiently and intently, and his knack for asking the right question at the right time. His initial plan was to be a high school teacher, but after some life-transforming travels through southern Africa, he decided to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Victoria (1993) focussed on history and english. This was followed by a Masters Degree in Public Administration (1997) which led to a 20+ year career in human resources. And then life happened. After a major health crisis, Daryl made a major shift in his career focus and completed a Masters of Counselling degree at Providence Theological Seminary (2015). After graduation, Daryl worked at a non-profit counselling centre before joining a Victoria-based clinical counselling practice. And then life happened again, so Daryl returned to full time human resources work until Spring 2023 at which point he decided to pursue his counselling interests on a full time basis. Daryl brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to his role as a counsellor. In his practice, Daryl takes an integrated person-centered, trauma informed approach that draws from ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), attachment theory, existential / narrative therapy, and Gestalt therapy. Daryl is a lifetime learner and has recently completed Level 1 Trauma Informed Practice Training through the Trauma Informed Care Institute in Vancouver, and is working towards Wilfred Laurier University’s Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Certificate program. In early 2024, he will be starting the Birth and Reproductive Trauma Certificate Program offered through Canadian Perinatal Mental Health Trainings. Daryl enjoys working with clients who are dealing with life circumstances such as: grief, loss, career transition and retirement, chronic pain, relationships issues, and health diagnoses. Daryl also has a growing interest in infertility and reproductive health counselling. He is also offering couple counselling geared towards these life circumstances. Daryl is excited about his role at Total Body Health and looks forward to helping his clients discover the best in themselves, heal from the past, and look forward to the future.
