###Registered Psychologist
#####I am a Registered Psychologist with over a decade of experience in the field of mental health. I support adults 18+ and youth 16+.
With 14 years of experience working in the field of mental health, and 7 years as a counselling therapist, I have experience working in various settings including public health agencies, schools, non-profit agencies, and most recently in the private practice setting where I now focus primarily on working with individuals ages 16 and up.
My experience as a therapist has included working with individuals from the age of four years old and up with a wide array of presenting concerns, levels of functioning, life experiences, and levels of support. My passion and bulk of my experience is working with individuals to address common concerns including depression, anxiety, the impacts of trauma, general stress management and more through a supportive, validating, and empowering therapeutic relationship. When things feel like they are too much, I will model regulation with a calm presence, which will help your system to regulate too.
#####You are not alone with your struggles or on your path of growth and wellbeing.
I understand that initiating therapy can be daunting and that the process of trying to find a therapist who is a good fit for you isn’t always the most streamlined process. Struggling with your mental health or wellbeing may feel isolating, like you are alone, or maybe you feel like you would be bothering others with your problems if you were to share with them. One of the things I love about therapy is that it is YOUR space, in a world that can be chaotic, where the outside world can be silenced and you can zone in on yourself for an hour. It’s not often that people get that opportunity!
#####Humans have a natural tendency to heal – whether it be a physical or an emotional wound – and sometimes some skilled support can help facilitate that process.
My education was largely rooted in Person-Centered and Solution-Focussed therapies, which has had a strong influence on my approach to counselling and the therapeutic relationship that I value. A Person-Centered approach means that I am supportive, non-judgemental, understanding, compassionate, and believe in your ability to succeed and work through whatever brings you into therapy. Unconditional positive regard is an aspect of this approach which means that you can come to me with essentially anything and I will hold accepting space for it.
With a Solution-Focussed approach, I will always celebrate your wins (no matter how small they may seem to you), highlight when things are working and help you to explore steps that can get you closer to where you want to be.
There is no issue too big or too small for therapy – it is all about what your needs and hopes are and how I can support you in getting where you want to be.
With all that said, I will still challenge you, but in a gentle way. I work from a trauma-informed lens – meaning that I acknowledge the widespread impact that difficult experiences can have on individuals’ lives. I honor the pace that is comfortable for you – and I check in often to ensure we are working at a pace that works for you.
#####I provide opportunities to experience different perspectives, exploring what is working and what might not be.
I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based approaches into therapy, based on your presenting concerns, history, and preferences.
I use strategies from CBT to help acknowledge and identify how patterns in thinking impact an individual’s emotions, behaviors, and even physiological states. With this approach, there can be a shift from unhelpful to adaptive patterns. Since we cannot change the situations that occur around us, what can be helpful is to adjust the way we react to them.
As Victor Frankl said, “between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom”. This can be easier said than done, which is where therapy can help! We may use therapeutic tools to address a particular issue in therapy, and then these tools are yours to keep and apply whenever needed in the future. In this way you are setting yourself up for growth and success.
I also have additional training in EMDR which can be integrated into therapy to address limiting beliefs that have been influenced by past experiences and may be contributing to current distress or discontent. EMDR is about processing things that may have gotten stuck in our system in a maladaptive way, so that you can be freed up from what you are holding onto and start to experience it in a more adaptive way that doesn’t have such a negative impact on your life.
ACT is another training that I have completed which allows me to support you in increasing your ability to cope with the difficult stuff, while also exploring values and meaningful action that you can take to continue to build a meaningful life. Again, the tools learned here help set you up for success and increase your resiliency in the future.
#####I will encourage curiosity over judgment and provide a calming space to explore, learn, and grow.
I know that life can sometimes be difficult (I too am human and vulnerable to what life can bring), and I have a passion to help others on their mental health and wellness journeys. Though life can be difficult, you are also resilient. No one is more of an expert of your life than you, and I strive to help you use this expertise to enrich your life.
Aside from all of this therapy stuff, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, being in the atmosphere of live music, events, and travel, being in nature - particularly near the water or in the mountains (especially when snowboarding). I also love taking it easy, relaxing, and recharging at home. I value respectful, supportive relationships in all areas of my life.
I hope this information can be helpful in your journey of initiating therapy. It is inspiring to witness others taking time to seek the support they deserve, and I would be honoured to be a part of that with you.
