“Our family were multi-generational members here all the way up through my childhood, including my grandparents, and my parents still are to the best of my knowledge; however, as an adult, I am no-longer included on their membership. . I have fond memories of learning to skate, swim, do gymnastics, and martial arts here in my youth. I played hockey on their team for a time--even getting to play a mini-scrimmage against another team at GM Place in front of a massive audience, as the half-time show for a Vancouver Canucks game when I was back in grade school--and frequently invited friends over to play Tennis, or work out in the weight-room(s) on site. . I tried my hand at curling, fencing, and a whole host of other activities in my time here, albeit achieving a lesser overall skill level. . My sister however, became quite an adept figure skater as a result of her training here at the Arbutus Club, and through her connections, served as one of the flower girls for the Olympics, and is personally acquainted with Patrick Chan, among others; eventually taking up the role of professional part-time figure skating instructor as a hobby, alongside her Business degree. . . We always attended the Canada day Pancake Breakfasts; and I was also quite fond of the Christmas 'Winter Ice' displays, complete with complementary sugar cookies, hot chocolate, and music. . In my time here, I noted that the facilities appear to be zealously remodelled every 2-3 years, not out of need, but in a bid to appear more trendy, and elitist in nature; which certainly won me brownie points with those of my friends that didn't have a membership for their household. This--along with several major expansions--did result in a massive spike to the membership cost in recent years, as well as an increasingly lengthy waiting list of potential wealthy patrons of the establishment. . . The only problem I ever had here, was with the retinal scanner/facial recognition scanner thing on the newly installed elevators for the parkade, at around the time that I stopped going due my reaching adulthood; it was my 19th Birthday, and I was to have lunch with my grandmother in one of the 5 star restaurants on site (there are 2, plus The Arbutus Bistro, and a bar; that I know of). . Somehow, the elevator wouldn't go up, and wouldn't let me out back into the underground parkade where my car was parked; I became trapped in the elevator for nearly half an hour, using the buzzer thing to try and get someone's attention, because the built in emergency phone didn't work, and I couldn't get a signal on my cell; my frantic panic continued, until eventually a staff member heard the noise of the elevator's panic button, overrode the system, and let me out. . Needless to say, I was late to that meeting, and never went back. But that one, major incident aside, it's a good place for wealthy people, and upper-middle class people that have been grandfathered in, to interact and socialize. . A great place.”
