“Don’t bother going if you are sick or pregnant as for the doctors are so lazy. I’m pregnant and have infection yet the doctor couldn’t be bothered to do his job and send my prescription to the pharmacy at all.”

“We are relatively new to Whitecourt. We’ve lived in Ontario and New Brunswick. When comparing hospitals from those provinces to here, Alberta hospitals are great. My husband and I have been amazed with our experiences at the Whitecourt hospital. Everyone has been kind and we have had no wait time. Coming from a province where we had to wait on average 8 to 12 hours to see someone, where people have actually died in the waiting room I feel we are blessed.”Read moreShow less

“A Profound Failure of Care for a Pregnant Trauma Victim I do not consider this institution a safe place for anyone in need of responsive, trauma-informed care. I first arrived at the emergency department around 1 AM this morning, 12 weeks pregnant, barefoot, and in wet clothes after fleeing an altercation. I was seeking refuge and a medical check. What I experienced was a cascade of neglect and insensitivity. Initial Abandonment: I initially found the entrance deserted, with no staff in sight after pushing the emergency button outside, repeating “I need help.” I was found and followed into the entrance by the individual I had left. Inadequate Triage: The triage nurse stated they "couldn't check on my baby" because I wasn't far enough along and could not answer my urgent, time-sensitive question about abortion options in Alberta. I was left to wait cold and wet, in soiled pants and without shoes. Basic comforts like a blanket or booties were only mentioned later, after I insisted I needed to leave to complete the paperwork necessary to try to secure my access to food, medicine, and shelter. Deception to Keep Me: I was told the doctor was "right there" to convince me to stay, even as I asked to get some fresh air. I continued to wait. Uninformed and Judgmental Doctor: When the doctor finally arrived, she was also unable to provide much information on my options, beyond telling me I'd have to go to Edmonton and she didn’t know if the pill was still an option at 12 weeks. When I explained my children have been missing for a year and I didn’t want to relive that experience or risk a child—in response to “why do you want an abortion”—, she followed up with asking when I moved here. I answered when and she responded with a deeply insensitive and irrelevant question: asking if that was when I had "stopped looking for my kids." No Physical Examination: Despite my visible distress, my pregnancy, and the fact that I was barefoot, and statements of injuries/events, the doctor performed no physical examination. Beyond standard triage (blood pressure, etc.), she did not assess my well-being or even the visible cuts on my feet. False Documentation: Most alarmingly, the doctor documented that I "refused care." This is categorically false. I was refused the care I sought. I was denied answers, denied an examination, and denied compassion. I was walked home with the same untreated, bleeding wounds I arrived with. I came to this hospital in a state of extreme vulnerability. I was met with ignorance, judgment, and a complete abandonment of medical duty. The final insult was being falsely labeled as non-compliant. This experience added profound trauma when I needed safety and expertise most.”Read moreShow less
