“I would give this department 0 stars if possible. The staff I dealt with were rude, unprofessional and unreasonable. Definitely do not recommend going here.”

“Terrible customer service. Was not friendly at all, I was politely asking a question and the lady on the phone starts to cut me off while talking. Basically told me to hang up and solve my own problem. Please change your staff or train them properly.”

“Came upon this as I was looking up info to share with another special needs family. This program was the answer to a prayer for our family. The other review on here made me want to counter balance them. Don’t know what services the previous reviewer is referring to, but we’ve had dental examinations, X-rays (both standing still, while camera moves around the head) and the traditional in your mouth one, basic dental work, (cavity and fillings), dental cleaning and wisdom teeth extractions (all 4) both under general anesthetic (extractions, cavity work, even deep cleaning) and more recently dental hygiene appts awake, aware and unmedicated! A testament to the patience, dedication, and respect these healthcare professionals have exhibited in fostering a relationship of trust with vulnerable, marginalized individuals in our community. Referred twice over a 10 years span, our family member is an adult, Special Needs person with Autism, receives a Person’s With Disabilities (PWD) income and nothing else as he is not employed. We have not paid more than $10-20 and it was for extra fluoride treatment. We are thankful that he is young, healthy and not yet needing the much costlier crowns, caps and other services. As we don’t need them, I don’t know what the costs are but in any case I would think it could not be any more money than in private practise and I would guess more affordable and accessible regardless. We have also paid the $50 no show fee. I messed up and forgot about an appointment made 5 months in advance. As the person for whom this appointment was made for has low cognitive skills and cannot manage his schedule, this was my failing and we were ok paying as we recognize that valuable healthcare time was wasted while the team could have seen someone else. This is no different than any other private or publicly funded health service and is a nominal fee. This place, this program is literally the only one that is publicly subsidized and works with VGH healthcare and in partnership with UBC’s department of dentistry for any OR surgeries that need to be done under general anesthesia. For our special needs community members that have low cognition, low IQ, low functioning, non verbal, have pain management issues, excessive needle phobias and/or anything else that stands in the way of accessing needed dental care, this program is literally their only other recourse. My ‘person’ cannot attend or manage themselves in a regular dental setting to get an oral mouth exam, Xrays and if necessary the needed dental work that goes with it. It would literally cost thousands and thousands of dollars to do the most basic of this in a private dental practise under sedation and/or general anesthesia if at all, and the family and extended family, doesn’t have that. Money aside, I have too many stories to share on this review, of the individual young dentists, dental surgeons, OR nurses, anesthesiologists, and dental hygienists that have consulted with me/him/us, in a positive, caring, respectful, professional manner. I have seen and heard these highly trained healthcare professionals practise person centred care in adapting their language when talking to the patient/client, taking the time to really establish a rapport, talk about an interest and answer questions or reassure and calm. I have talked to some of these people, and they have asked about the quality of life of the patient (that they are attending in a one off visit!). In a breakthrough visit, a young dr. put on a lead vest after the dental technician gave up and sat beside him holding his hand and his mouth to get the shot. We’ve been less than a half dozen times total, but in that time I have seen other patients and families come and go. Some really old, some barely ambulatory, some alone or with a worker, others with family members. Everyone I have seen has looked vulnerable, marginalized and in need of care.
