“On July 27th, 2023 my mother died in the care of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. My family and I have never received answers about her death and we believe she passed due to racism and lack of care towards indigenous people in the health care system. My mother was not only blind but she was a diabetic, receiving Dialysis 3 days a week, and was 71 years old. She had fallen at home two/three days prior, resulting in her breaking her hip and wrist, was brought to emergency right away, then flown to Thunder Bay. (There can be complications and it can be dangerous to go without surgery if left too long.) She had complained the night before she passed the lack of care she was receiving and how sick she was getting, yet was ignored. I believe the health care team waited too long for her hip and wrist surgery, which I think also lead to her unpreventable death. I lose sleep at night about this often, even though some time has passed. My family and I have tried to hire a lawyer but was unsuccessful due to lack of information. I know that the statute of limitations is two years and now I feel hopeless, still left with no answer, justice or an apology. When a health care team fails to give proper care and a patient dies due to that, they should be held accountable or should not be working in that field anymore. The racism and lack of care against Indigenous people in this hospital has to stop, since this has happened, I still have heard horrifying stories of Indigenous people being mistreated at this hospital. This has raised many questions and concerns. How many more people have lost their life due the negligence of this hospital? Why was the last phone call between my mother & father at 1am, yet they found her dead at 5am? Was the nurse not doing their hourly checks? My mom was very ill and vulnerable, she should have been monitored carefully because of her conditions. Truly awful and heartbreaking. I will never forget that this was the way my mom’s life ended. I never got to say goodbye to her.”Read moreShow less

“Since our accident in June, my partner and I have been receiving $45 bills titled "late bill" from TBRHSC. As my insurance has been taking care of those kinds of things, I sent a copy to my insurance agent... In the mean time, we received a couple more notices of still having $45 due each, assuming insurance was just being slow as per usual, we set the bills aside. Yesterday, I get a similar bill, this time with a fluorescent pink sticker on it, threatening collections action.... over $45? Upon calling I was informed this is an ambulance fee that needs to be paid up front and will be reimbursed back. Nowhere on the bill did it ever say that, I had to call myself and get that information, TBRHSC would rather send me to collections. Threatening collections against somebody without fully explaining a bill is not only distasteful but downright nauseating in my opinion. TBRHSC prioritizes bill collection over healing 👎👎👎”Read moreShow less
