About Sergei: Sergei Kham is a fourth generation disciple of the art’s gatekeeper, Sam Chin (from New York city). Sergei’s skill in ZXD is very high level: I have been doing martial arts for over 17 years and thought I knew a few things… Until I quickly found myself being effortlessly tossed around the room by Sergei! A humbling experience indeed…! In addition to high level of martial skill, Sergei is a wonderful teacher who can communicate the philosophy and concepts of ZXD as well as the physical aspects. More than any teacher I’ve ever worked with he is able to both ‘meet you where you are’ and ‘push you a little further’. In addition, the other students in the class are supportive and welcoming to new students. Having Sergei here to teach is a true blessing, and I can wholeheartedly recommend his class to anyone looking to begin or continue their martial art journey. About Zhong Xin Dao (ZXD): ZXD is a Chinese martial art that has come to Vancouver via Malasia and New York city. It literally means ‘heart-center-path’ and is the refinement of a martial art called ‘I Lik Chuan’ (mind-power-fist). In English, it has been called the ‘martial art of awareness’. Recognizing and cultivating awareness is at the core of this martial art. Really… that’s all there is to it! I have been doing martial arts for over 17 years (mostly Tai Chi, Wing Chun, and BJJ), and ZXD is undoubtedly the clearest, well-thought out, and effective martial art I have ever encountered. It can either complement other ongoing or previous training (i.e. MMA; boxing; wing chun) or be practiced as an art in its own right. Over and over again in this training have I had moments were I thought ‘oh! This is what <insert other form or style> was trying to teach me!”. It can thus be pursued to inform other sports or dance movements, or purely for health and energetic reasons. Make no mistake though: it is a devastatingly effective fighting style as well. It just depends on what you want to get out of your training. Classes at lower levels involve mostly solo movements (can you pay attention? And: What are you actually doing?). As you progress, more and more elements are added as we ‘stretch’ our attention wider and wider. Gradually partner work is incorporated with progressively less formal structure (i.e. spinning hands through to sparring). In addition, there are two main forms. Despite being relatively short, these forms have endless details to incorporate into your ‘sphere’ of attention. For those curious to learn more about Zhong Xin Dao, I encourage you to look at their website or some of the many YouTube videos online! Then come try a class.

I liq Chuan with Sergey at SFU is always a highlight of my week. I liq Chuan balances the mind and the body meanwhile you actually feel like becoming a warrior via small, scaffolded changes in posture. Sergey is a great teacher with extensive knowledge and a genuinely good person to be around. Highly recommend.
