It's a long term facility.

Smelly, cramped hallways and very noisy. Apparently the food is horrible? Personally haven’t tried any food, just remarks from patients I talked with.

Food quality varies from poor to fair, care quality is okay but not as good as Carewest Glenmore Park

My experience with the Carewest Sarcee Transition Unit was deeply disappointing and, ultimately, devastating for my 92-year-old mother. While I want to acknowledge that most of the frontline staff I encountered were kind individuals, the care my mother received lacked the basic advocacy and proactive support a senior in recovery requires. My mother was admitted after breaking her hip. She had just regained the ability to walk, and I communicated this clearly to the staff. Despite witnessing her walking, my requests for them to assist her with short walks, even just to the dining room, were met with the response, "If I’m not busy." Unsurprisingly, that time was never found. Instead of movement, she was given laxatives and Tylenol, with the charting simply stating "she is not ambulating." Which resulted in so many more unnecessary negative outcomes for my mom. As someone who has worked with seniors my entire life, it is shameful to see patients being "warehoused" rather than rehabilitated. Because of this lack of simple, daily effort to keep her moving, my mother has now lost her mobility entirely. The transition process was equally frustrating. My mother was forced to accept the first available bed in one of the worst long-term-care centres in the city. A place where I have personally witnessed staff being cruel to former clients. The social worker involved appeared to be uninformed regarding the regulations and rights families have concerning bed refusals. Which made things so much more stressful. The few positives: The unit manager was professional and took a significant amount of time to speak with me on the phone. While this did not change the outcome for my mother, the time spent was appreciated. The facility offered a shared bathroom, which is a small mercy considering many rooms there do not even have one. Such small rooms and a very old facility. It is heartbreaking to watch a vibrant person lose their independence because the system found it easier to medicate her than to walk her. I hope this review encourages the facility to re-evaluate how they prioritize mobility for their most vulnerable patients.

I wish my family had good things to say about this facility- but I would not wish this place on my worst enemy. My grandparent was “existing” here, and I watched them go in walking, talking, eating and dressing all on their own- to them being confined to a chair, stuck in a hallway facing the wall for 8 hours as a punishment, fed literal garbage that I wouldn’t even give a raccoon. Honestly the food was revolting. My grandparent was terrified if we went outside with them, couldn’t go anywhere because apparently they would get a “scolding” after. They refused to treat anything. We noticed several UTIs over the years and we had to FIGHT to get the nurses to call the doctors for antibiotics. It was always SUCH a fight. One of the nurses was by far the worst- she knows who she is (starts and ends with an A). One time my grandparent was so out of it from an infection they were being nasty (as old people do when they are infections, we were told by hospital staff), and one of the nurses took every opportunity for 6 months to tell us ALL the things they did wrong each day. It was humiliating. I watched my grandparent become a shell of who they once were. My grandparent had a severe infection and was very swollen. It was in a very obvious location, you couldn’t miss it. I’m not even medically trained and I saw it. We had told staff 3 times about it during the course of a week, and each time they said “oh we didn’t even notice”. It was a massive abscess. I am almost 100% certain they were drugging them with sedatives and not recording it. I took my grandparents medication sheet to the pharmacy to find out WHY they were asleep ALL THE TIME. nothing in their list apparently caused that. The staff refused to explain anything, just saying that’s how they “always” were. I’ve spoken to several other people over the last year and funnily enough they all had similar experiences with their family member at this facility. “Blacking out” episodes, women being bathed naked by male staff without consent or even remembering until days or weeks later, residents being dragged out of bed and screamed at. Everyone I spoke too also said their family member just seemed to be “so sleepy” all the time, and just so suddenly. They didn’t have any medications that would cause that either. When my grandparent was passing, the staff coldly informed our designated contact, and when our family arrived, we were lied too about what happened, then ignored. No one told us what was happening with them, or why. The staff wouldn’t come in and check on them. They didn’t change them for 18 hours, so they sat in a soiled diaper until one of my family members just grabbed supplies and changed them- but the staff didn’t even come to check for another 6 hours. When they finally passed, my other family member went to inform one of the other staff who scoffed, rolled their eyes and said “k fine, I’ll be right there” Then took a big huff. We didn’t know our next steps, and I had another family member who tried to ask what we do next. We were told we had to go clean out their room immediately and leave the building so they could “do their work”. They had only passed 20 minutes prior. We decided to stay, we didn’t want to leave our grandparent, and the nurse cold-stared us down until the funeral home came. It was awful. Just truly an awful experience. It’s been a while since we have been there, but I can’t even drive by without getting so angry. There are some good staff there too, some who seemed to really genuinely care. I just don’t understand how they treat people like this.

Negected our mother, who ended up with a serious head injury, stitches and is now back in Foothills. She is already a serious stroke patient. DO NOT SEND YOUR FAMilY HERE.

My mother was a rehab patient for seven weeks and was placed here against her will. She was appalled by the lack of professionalism of staff at all levels. The food was grotesque and the behaviour of the aides was unbearable. The condition of the rooms was no air conditioning and no tv and zero privacy.

Horrible place! Run down and needs major work accomplished. Staff unprofessional and all need training. Rehabilitation Services a major joke! Good unfit for human consumption!

Outstanding quality of care at this rehabilitation centre. Highly professional staff at all levels. Catering staff do a remarkable job in preparing tasty and nutritious meals: this was critical for my own recovery.
