“Twenty years ago, when I was just 3 years old, I was diagnosed with cancer. Today, I am 23 years old, healthy, and living a life that once wasn’t guaranteed. There truly aren’t enough words to express how grateful I am to BC Children’s Hospital. My family and I were shown so much love, compassion, and support during the most terrifying time of our lives. We never had to face it alone. Dr. Sheila Pritchard will always hold a special place in my heart. Although she is no longer at BC Children’s Hospital, I will never forget how she guided my family through every step, answered our endless questions, and helped us navigate the unknown with kindness and hope. I also want to thank Suzanne, Angela, and every doctor, nurse, child life specialist, volunteer, and staff member who cared for me. While cancer is something no child should ever experience, you all made an impossible journey a little less frightening. I still remember playing with the nurses, riding tricycles through the halls, the clowns who came to make us laugh, and going into what I called the “dizzy room.” Those memories remind me that even during the hardest days, everyone at BC Children’s Hospital worked so hard to make kids feel like kids. And to all of the nurses—thank you for putting up with 3-year-old me, especially when I kept ripping out my IVs because they were uncomfortable. I’m sure I didn’t make your jobs easy, but you always showed me patience, kindness, and a smile. I’ll probably always hate hospitals and follow-up appointments because of what they represent, but I will never stop being grateful for everything BC Children’s Hospital gave me. “It’s a great hospital! I couldn’t walk for days, and they kept me in the hospital till i was able to walk! They provided with great care! Nurses, Doctors, and other health workers were excellent and very kind! Definitely recommend going here!”

“Highly recommended Dr Collingridge Alissa S my 6 month old daughter suffering from severe Eczema we try lot of things but after appointment with her she explained each and every thing briefly and prescribed medication after that my baby sleep well eat well feel relieved and us too from her condition she is highly educated. “My Daughter was admitted for a 5 day stay. We went early on a saturday morning, there were other families in the waiting are when we checked in. I totally understand it is frustrating to wait hours, but they are pretty quick to get the children in to see a doctor when it is classified as trauma or a dire emergency. I will never take my daughter to any other hospital even though it is a LONG drive. We were quickly seen by a doctor, specialist and had 2 BIG procedures and admitted to floor T6 to begin her journey to healing within 12 hours. (12 hours is pretty good considering everything that needed to be complete) Although it felt rushed, and pretty traumatizing at some points, i will forever be grateful. My daughter is now post 6 days of her stay and can see so many improvements. My daughter was not an easy patient, they never made me as a parent feel bad for her fits, cries, they were SOOO patient with her, and really tried to make her stay as comfortable as possible. “We had a recent ENT surgery experience at BC Children’s Hospital, and I just want to share how grateful we are. From the moment we arrived, everything was handled with such professionalism, kindness, and care. The nurses were absolutely exceptional. so patient, attentive, and reassuring throughout the entire process. “I recently visited BC children Hospital with my child after going to another hospital, and I was genuinely impressed by the level of care we received. From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, kind, and very attentive to our needs. The environment felt calm and well organized. The rooms were clean, modern, and comfortable, which really helped reduce stress during a difficult time. I also appreciated how thoughtful the hospital was toward families—especially children. The snacks and kids’ meal options were a nice touch and made the experience more convenient. What stood out the most was the compassion of the nurses and staff. They took time to explain everything clearly and made sure both my child and I felt supported throughout the visit. You can tell that patient care is a real priority here. “My three-year-old child has a lazy eye. At first, we went to a private clinic for eye examinations and treatment. However, the doctor there seemed more like a businessperson. Each visit cost $115, and it felt like she kept asking us to come back again and again without giving clear answers. Every time I asked about my child’s progress, she would just say, “We’ll see what happens during this trial.” Meanwhile, my child’s eye showed no improvement. As a mother, I became very frustrated. Eventually, I decided to ask our family doctor for a referral to a pediatric ophthalmologist at the children’s hospital. Fortunately, we received an appointment in less than two weeks. We saw Dr. Sameh Soliman-Gaballah, who has a PhD. He explained everything very clearly — the reasons behind each step, what results we might expect, and what treatment options are available. He was very professional and efficient. He also confirmed that the private clinic had been making unnecessary circles, which delayed proper treatment for my child. As a mother, I want to encourage other parents not to blindly trust some private clinics in Vancouver West. Some of them operate more like businesses than medical professionals. “Rethinking Pediatric Emergency Care Last night we took our 4 year old to BC Children's Hospital after she vomited more than 20 times and could not keep water or electrolytes down. We arrived at 12:30 am. She continued vomiting in the waiting room, weak and exhausted. There were only about five children waiting. First treatment came around 4:30 am. A doctor saw her at 7:00 am. We left at 7:30 am. I want to be very clear. The doctors and staff were kind, attentive and professional. The people are incredible. This is not a criticism of those working on the ground. But it does raise a bigger question. When a small child is that sick in the middle of the night, sitting on a chair for hours, and the waiting room is not even full, can we confidently call this emergency care? Our healthcare workers are doing their best inside a structure that seems stretched and reactive. Maybe the opportunity is to rethink the flow, triage and communication. Could there be real time updates to families so children can rest more comfortably? A way to design the journey so it is more patient centered, especially for kids? The infrastructure and the professionals are top level. The system itself needs fresh rethinking. I am not angry. I am hopeful. Hopeful that we can study the process, question it with empathy, and design something better for families who walk in scared in the middle of the night with a sick child in their arms.”Read moreShow less
